During the winter Islay is visited by tens of thousands of visitors. These visitors are not all interested in the unique whisky tastes on the island, nor do they pay much attention to the scenery. These wintering geese create an amazing spectacle, but arrive in such numbers that they cause damage to the local farmland. As a consequence, locals volunteer to count the geese in the fields allowing subsidies (relating to the number of geese) to be paid to the farmers.
