The Islay Life - The Pier

In Alfred Barnard's 1887 publication 'The Whisky Distilleries of the United Kingdom' Bunnahabhain is described as having built 'a commodious and handsome pier at a cost of about £3,500'.

Originally, this handsome investment was used by the distillery for unloading distillery provisions and loading finished whisky onto steamers that could, at one time, dock on both sides of the pier.

As the distillery had only been built in 1881 and Mr Barnard visited in 1887, there must have been high demand for the fruits of Bunnahabhain's labour even back then; although 6 years hardly seems enough time to rest such a fine malt, so, we are glad to be a little less rushed these days.
