The Islay Life - A Weighty Tome

Alfred Barnard's 1887 exploration of all 161 distilleries in the United Kingdom is a whisky lover's dream. His exploration of the topic is both informative and entertaining, giving an insight into an industry at its peak.

The detailed description of Bunnahabhain does not include a note on the spirit being produced but, in our minds, this is quite right; in 1887 our oldest cask would only have been 6 years old and, as far as we are concerned, this is far too early to disturb the fruits of our labour. On the other hand, Mr Barnard does refer to our clear Margadale spring source as water 'such as delights the heart of a Distiller'. We could not agree more and we are proud that this natural resource has remained our only source of water for over 125 years.

'Such as delights the heart of a distiller.'
